Background of the study
The process of allocating hostel accommodations to university students is a significant challenge in many higher education institutions, especially in large universities where demand exceeds availability. Traditional manual methods of allocation often lead to inefficiencies, such as delays, errors, and lack of transparency. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based hostel allocation systems have been developed to address these challenges by automating and optimizing the allocation process. These systems use algorithms to consider various factors such as student preferences, available spaces, and special needs, aiming to provide a fair and efficient allocation. At Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, the manual allocation system has proven inadequate in managing the increasing number of students and their diverse accommodation needs. The introduction of AI-based systems promises to streamline the process, improving both student satisfaction and operational efficiency.
Statement of the problem
The current hostel allocation system at Federal University, Lokoja, relies heavily on manual processes that are often time-consuming and prone to errors. This results in inefficiencies such as improper allocations, delays in hostel assignments, and dissatisfaction among students. Additionally, the lack of a centralized and automated system increases the administrative burden on university staff. The absence of an AI-powered hostel allocation system that can dynamically adjust to students' preferences and needs further exacerbates these issues. There is a need to explore the potential of AI to optimize the hostel allocation process and improve both student experiences and administrative efficiency.
Objectives of the study
1. To design and implement an AI-based hostel allocation system for Federal University, Lokoja.
2. To evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the AI-based system in managing hostel allocations.
3. To assess student satisfaction with the AI-based hostel allocation system compared to the traditional system.
Research questions
1. How effective is the AI-based hostel allocation system in improving the efficiency of the allocation process?
2. What are the key benefits and challenges associated with implementing the AI-based system in hostel allocation?
3. How satisfied are students with the AI-powered hostel allocation system compared to the manual system?
Research hypotheses
1. The AI-based hostel allocation system will significantly improve the efficiency of hostel management at Federal University, Lokoja.
2. The AI-powered system will lead to greater student satisfaction with the hostel allocation process compared to traditional methods.
3. Implementing the AI-based system will reduce administrative workload and improve resource management in hostel allocation.
Significance of the study
This research will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on AI applications in university administration, particularly in hostel management. By evaluating the effectiveness of AI-based hostel allocation systems, the study can provide insights that may be applied to other universities, improving operational efficiency and student satisfaction.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of an AI-based hostel allocation system at Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State. Limitations include potential resistance to the adoption of new technologies by university staff and students, as well as challenges in system integration with existing infrastructure.
Definitions of terms
• AI-Based Hostel Allocation: A system powered by artificial intelligence that automates and optimizes the allocation of hostel rooms based on various factors like student preferences, available spaces, and other criteria.
• Efficiency: The ability of the system to allocate hostel spaces accurately and promptly with minimal errors or delays.
• Student Satisfaction: The level of contentment experienced by students with respect to the hostel allocation process.
